Bo’go - 3D Character Design

This project documents the creation of Bo’go, a 4ft tall goblin character inspired by artist Brian Froud, from initial concept to a fully sculpted 3D model. The goal was to develop a unique and expressive character while exploring the complete workflow of character creation.

The process began with research and concept development, including mood boards and 2D turn-arounds to establish Bo’go’s proportions, personality, and distinctive features. Inspired by Brian Froud’s illustrations and classic goblin designs, Bo’go’s grotesque yet friendly aesthetic guided every step of the design.

Next, I sculpted the character digitally, translating 2D references into a 3D form. Voxel sculpting was used for rough shaping, followed by Hard Surface sculpting to refine details. Retopology was applied to create a clean, animation-ready mesh, and UV mapping prepared the model for future texturing. Additional modelling techniques were used to create accessories, like Bo’go’s helmet and horns, with attention to both design and functionality.

While the technical aspects of modelling, retopology, and UV mapping were familiar to me, this project allowed me to significantly improve my character creation and sculpting skills. Bo’go’s design demonstrates my ability to blend creativity with technical proficiency, resulting in a character that is both visually compelling and full of personality.
